דה רוק התחייב לתרומת ענק: "איך אפשר לעזור?"

כוכב הקולנוע הקים קרן מיוחדת יחד עם מנחת הטלוויזיה אופרה ווינפרי, למען התושבים שבתיהם נשרפו באסון בהוואי. "מקווים שהקרן תמשיך לבצע העברות לתושבים למשך שישה חודשים לפחות"

אופרה ווינפרי ודוויין "דה רוק" ג'ונסון התחייבו לתרום 10 מיליון דולר לתושבי מאווי שאינם מסוגלים לחזור לבתיהם בגלל השריפות באי הוואי, באמצעות קרן חדשה שעליה הכריזו אתמול במשותף. "קרן העם של מאווי" תיתן 1,200 דולר לחודש למבוגרים שאינם יכולים לחזור למגוריהם בגלל השריפות האחרונות, גם בעלי בתים וגם שוכרים, לפי אתר האינטרנט של הקרן. 
"איך אנחנו עוזרים?" כוכב "מהיר ועצבני" סיפר שהוא ווינפרי שאלו אחד את השני במהלך השריפות, ואמר בסרטון שהם מתלבטים איך לכוון את המאמצים שלהם בצורה הטובה ביותר. "אתה רוצה לדאוג לצורך הגדול ביותר של האנשים, וזה דרך כסף".
הם מצפים לעזרתו של "כל אדם שהתקשר אלי ואמר, 'מה אני יכול לעשות?'", אמרה ווינפרי בסרטון. "זה מה שאתה יכול לעשות."
 
השניים קיבלו השראה מקרן דומה שהוקמה על ידי דולי פרטון לאחר שריפות בר קשות באזור גטלינבורג, טנסי בדצמבר 2016, בהן נהרגו 14 בני אדם ונהרסו 2,400 מבנים.

ווינפרי, שמחזיקה בית במאווי, ביקרה שם בימים שלאחר פגיעת השריפה ודאגה לקבל משאבים יעילים לתושבים. לפחות 115 בני אדם נהרגו בשריפות, אם כי קיים עדיין מספר לא ידוע של נעדרים. השריפה שפרצה בעיירה ההיסטורית להאינה ב-8 באוגוסט הייתה הקטלנית ביותר בארה"ב זה יותר ממאה שנה.
בהודעה, ווינפרי וג'ונסון אמרו שהם התייעצו עם "זקני הקהילה, מנהיגים ותושבים". ג'ונסון ווינפרי "מקווים שהקרן תמשיך לבצע העברות לתושבים למשך שישה חודשים לפחות", אך ווינפרי אמרה שזה יהיה תלוי בציבור האמריקני לקבוע כמה זמן תימשך הקרן, על סמך תמיכתם ותרומותיהם.
"קשה יהיה לעמוד ביעד אם המטרה שהצבנו לא תתאים למציאות של האנשים", היא אמרה, והוסיפה שהקרן צריכה לשקול אם הכלכלה המקומית יכולה להגיב לזרם הכסף ולמפות אילו שירותים אחרים יניתן לספק.
