בעידן שבו ניתן לרכוש כמעט כל דבר באינטרנט, לא מפתיע שגם מכונות לייצור יהלומים זמינות לרכישה. באתר הסחר עליבאבא, ניתן למצוא מכונת ייצור יהלומים בעלות של 200,000 דולר. המשקפת מגמה של דמקרוטיזציה בייצור היהלומים. תהליך זה שהחל לפני עשרות שנים, ממשיך להתפתח ולהנגיש את ייצור היהלומים המלאכותיים לשוק הרחב.
ההיסטוריה של יהלומים מלאכותיים מתחילה בשנות ה-50, אז הצליחה חברת ג'נרל אלקטריק לייצר את היהלומים הראשונים במעבדה באמצעות תהליך HPHT (לחץ וטמפרטורה גבוהים), המדמה את התנאים הטבעיים ליצירת יהלומים. כיום, קיימות שתי שיטות עיקריות לייצור יהלומים: תהליך HPHT ושיטת CVD (שקיעת אדים כימיים). מכונות משני הסוגים ניתנות לרכישה, אם כי מכונת CVD תעלה יותר, סביב 450,000 דולר.
למרות שנראה כי רכישת מכונת ייצור יהלומים היא פיתוי מסקרן, התהליך עצמו אינו פשוט ודורש מומחיות רבה. כל אחת מהשיטות דורשת חומרי גלם ספציפיים, כמו גרפיט באיכות גבוהה, מתכות קטליזטוריות וגזים מיוחדים. נוסף על כך, יש צורך בשליטה מדויקת על הטמפרטורה והלחץ, וכן על ניהול הבטיחות והתחזוקה של הציוד.
כיום, ניתן לרכוש יהלומי מעבדה במשקל, כשהם זמינים לשוק הרחב במחירים מגוונים. תהליך זה משנה את תדמית היהלומים כנדירים ויוקרתיים, ומביא לעידן חדש בתעשיית היהלומים.
